THE EXTREME HANGOUT
Inspired by our love of extreme and adventure sports and our passion to protect the planet.
EXTREME established The Extreme Hangout in 2021 as a sustainability events impact platform to give young people a voice, popularise the climate movement and drive environmental action. Young and other underrepresented communities want a seat at the table and EXTREME made it its mission to deliver a stage where they could share their concerns and opinions, learn and be inspired.
Launched at COP26 in Glasgow, The Extreme Hangout became a leading fringe event where we took over a repurposed ferry on the River Clyde, created a space for anyone to come hangout, recharge and experience 11 days of inspiring story-led 'TedX' style talks, panel discussions, movie screenings and evening entertainment. Over 6000 people came to hear and be motivated by more than 200 incredible speakers. Please check out The Extreme Hangout at COP26 Glasgow video here.
We then ran again at COP27 in Egypt where The Extreme Hangout represented a coming together and celebration of all those with a shared passion for the healthy recovery of our natural world. We set up on the shores of the Red Sea, Sharm El Sheikh, co-located with the New York Times and created an authentic open air Bedouin village overlooking the reef and operated for 4 wonderful days and evenings. “The most beautiful, engaging event and maybe the coolest venue at COP27” Ivan Duque Marquez, Former President of Colombia. Please check out The Extreme Hangout at COP27 Egypt video here.
To date we have had over 300 incredible speakers (62% female) from Lily Cole and Bear Grylls to Paul Polman and the Prime Minister of the Bahamas join us, welcomed over 9000 visitors and achieved over 5m video views.
Building on the success of COP26 Glasgow, COP27 Egypt and having recently onboarded PwC as our first global sponsor, we are now rolling out an ambitious development and engagement program through the following initiatives:
The Extreme Hangout Local, hosted locally, delivering one-to-two-day climate action events anywhere in the world. Using a similar model to Ted-X we partner with passionate change-makers from all over the world to deliver events in collaboration with regional organisations, influencers, activists, pioneers, innovators, cities, and tourism boards. WHAT IS COP?
For the past 27 years the United Nations has brought together almost every country on earth for global climate summits, called COPs (Conference of the Parties). In the time since the first ever COP in Berlin in 1995, climate change has transformed from being a fringe issue to a global crisis.
The 28th COP will be hosted by Dubai in the United Arab Emirates at the Dubai Expo City tentatively from the 30th November to the 12th December 2023. With an expected attendance of over 80,000 delegates including 140 heads of state and government and over 5000 media professionals, COP28 carries high expectations to drive vital and urgent action for the future of our planet.
